This is going to be a lame answer, but Modern Warfare really mixed up how shooters work. It added in the leveling and progression mechanics you commonly see in RPGs to online shooters, which kept people playing for a long ass time.

That means map packs, DLC sales, and return customers next year. Now every game tries to add in some sort of online experience system.
